Steam Logistics serves over 4,500 customers globally, in industries such as building products, healthcare, furniture, and consumer products.

With over 800 team members across the nation, it’s their mission to be their customers’ #1 choice as a logistics partner.

Steam was originally born out of Access America in 2012 to focus solely on international freight forwarding and customs brokerage. In 2018 and 2021 respectively, Steam expanded into Drayage and Domestic Transportation in order to meet customers’ needs for the entire life cycle of their freight. Today, Steam is one of the fastest growing 3PLs in the US, delivering integrated logistics solutions across International, Intermodal, and Domestic modes.

With the launch of their new domestic service, the Steam team decided to take the leap to update their brand and digital home at the same time. By partnering with Whiteboard, the teams were able to collaborate in a new way to expand Steam‘s well-known customer service.

"Making the decision to work with Whiteboard was one of those rare situations where your expectations are really high when you partner with a company, and they still end up exceeding them. I knew we would get amazing creativity and a fantastic product. What I didn't realize was what a great process they would run in order to get us to the endpoint. Everything was super organized and they managed our expectations along the way. We came away with an amazing product and the process of getting there was anything but laborious. It was fun."

The Brand

For Steam's brand identity, we partnered with one of our favorite collaborators, Shammer Diaz, to help bring Steam's vision to life.

The symbol is inspired by the idea that Steam Logistics sees beyond the horizon when it comes to how investments are made. The middle is both a rising sun over a horizon as well as an eye that sees beyond.

As Steam continues to grow, their identity continues to make an impact as they become a nationally recognized brand.

The Website

After landing on the final design of Steam's identity, Whiteboard took the updated brand vision and created a new website. The site needed to appeal to a younger audience, while still illustrating Steam’s 20 years of experience.

“Working with the Steam Logistics team was a dream. They came to us open handed and trusted us in this project, which made the whole process really fun and seamless,” Whiteboard Senior Strategist, Grace Gorst said. “What really shown through was Steam Logistics’ care for their customers and their human interaction emphasis, that wasn’t something I had seen with their competitors.”

Through open conversation and collaborative communication during every project phase, whether design, photography, web strategy, or web development, Steam and Whiteboard were able to produce something that, ultimately, serves their growing audience well.

Ending the Exploitative Practice of Non-Compete Agreements

A non-compete agreement is a legal agreement or clause in a contract specifying that an employee must not enter into competition with an employer after the employment period is over. In 2017, The University of Chicago Press Journals reported that approximately 18 percent of labor force participants are bound by non-competes, with 38 percent having agreed to at least one in the past. But the practice of non-competes holds a dark side. In 2019, a report commissioned by the Economic Policy Institute concluded that non-competes agreements are harmful to wages and to competition, and part of a growing trend of employers requiring workers to sign away their rights.

“Non-competes are the dirty little secret of the freight and logistics industry," said Jason Provonsha, CEO of Steam Logistics. "It's an unfair practice, and we do not have one at Steam Logistics for a reason."

There's a growing consensus that non-compete agreements are bad for business, but millions of people are impacted by them every year. Especially college graduates who are entering the workforce with enthusiasm and don't always know the legal ramifications of what they're signing.

Earlier this year it was a LinkedIn post that caught our attention (and imagination) authored by Steve Cox, President of Steam Logistics.

My challenge to the industry is to end these non-competes. In the end, they are only a hassle for the pursuer and the pursued. Have some confidence in your opportunity! Non-competes only show the world that you don't. One of our customers has said they will not work with logistics companies with non-competes. I would love to see more customers follow suit. I believe we can see the end of the non-compete in logistics. Get on board. Prove that you believe in your company enough to end the practice. If you signed a non-compete, no problem! Steam Logistics has committed to defending anyone who comes to our company with one. We will also post any non-compete enforcement letter that is sent to us or our employees for all to read over.

We reached out to Steam's leadership about the possibility of building a campaign around this new initiative and a few weeks later we would be leading a workshop defining the vision and key deliverables for what's become End Non-Competes, a coalition of companies committed to eliminating non-competes within their organizations.

To date, over 130+ freight and logistics companies (and counting) have joined the coalition.

Bringing this campaign to life has been pure joy for our team.

Freight and Logistics companies committed to ending non-competes are inviting other companies to do three things:

  • Forge a new path in logistics and set a new standard by allowing employees to make the best choice for themselves and their families.
  • Prioritize the people who keep our world moving. Create a collaborative environment where everyone thrives.
  • Design a culture that best supports all team members regardless of background or tenure. Foster a place where your team members have a clear path for growth and success.
